Healthy Grocery Haul

The saying is true. You are what you eat. It's so important to fuel your body with foods that are nutrient dense and energy rich. Studies have shown that a diet rich in dark leafy greens and fruits and vegetables  will be greatly beneficial. This grocery haul supplemented the fruits, veggies, nuts, and dairy that I already had in my home. In the next entry, I'll show you how I used some of my household groceries to make my lunches for the entire week.

Here's what I got:

  • 96% Lean ground beef
  • 100% egg whites
  • frozen pineapple chunks (for smoothies)
  • Organic spinach
  • Kale green
  • Sweet potatoes
  • baby potatoes
  • banana chips
  • cranberries
  • raw honey
  • lemons
  • High fiber, low carb bread
  • spices (time, garlic)

Wake Me Up {Protein Green Smoothie}

This smoothie is the perfect way to start your day. This can act as a meal replacement shake, and is chocked full of vitamins, minerals, and deliciousness. And, let's face it... Most of us dont delight in eating raw green leafy veggies. This is a phenomenal way of getting your greens in. Trust me, you don't even taste the spinach.
What you'll need:

1 ripe banana
1/2 cup frozen pineapples
2 cups (or so of raw spinach)
1/4 cup of plain nonfat greek yogurt
raw ginger to taste
squeeze of fresh lemon juice
purified water
and a splash of orange juice to taste

It's as easy as putting everything to the blender and hit go. Garnish with lemon. Enjoy!

Tropical Breakfast Protein Shake

Wake up in the morning to this protein and nutrient packed shake. Not to mention, it's DELICIOUS! This shake is rich is the micro nutrients: lauric acid (from the coconut milk), potassium, vitamin C, B6, Manganese, and the macronutrients: Dietary fiber and protein. It contains the healthy carbohydrates, and when consumed with protein and the small amount of fat from the coconut milk, it has a great glycemic rating. This really tastes like a naughty treat rather than a boring protein shake. Give this one a try.

What you'll need:

1 scoop All natural whey protein (I used Designer whey. Any is fine, but try to avoid those with aspartame)
1 cup frozen diced pineapples
1 medium banana
1/2 cup coconut milk
squeeze of fresh lemon juice (1-2tbsp)
purified water (just enough to get the blender going (2-3tbsp) if needed*

Till next time,
To your health, to your beauty, to you!

Zesty Shrimp Fajita

Zesty Shrimp Fajita

I was feeling in the mood for Mexican food and for shrimp. However, I wanted to make a health conscious choice that would be guilt free. I used some simple swaps for healthier ingredients in this fajita. Instead of traditional fajita tortillas, I used Flatout light original wrap, which is very high in fiber, good source of protein and only 7 net grams of carbs and 90 calories. Instead of sour cream, I dolloped plain non-fat greek yogurt on, and you can't taste the difference. Give this a try, I'm sure you'll love it.

Ingredients:

Shrimp
seasoning mix (salt, pepper, garlic powder)
1 flatout flatbread
1/4 cup mixed peppers
2 tbsp avocado
dallop of nonfat plain greek yogurt
squeeze of lime juice to taste
jalapeno pepper hot sauce (or your favorite) to taste

Enjoy!

Till next time.

Yogurt Heaven

This greek yogurt breakfast is nutritious and delicious. It's chocked full of protein and has some healthy fats from the pecans. I like to get the plain greek yogurt and put your own vanilla and sweetener because the flavored yogurts have sugar levels off the chart. I enjoyed this with a fantastic cup of peppermint tea. You can sweeten it with honey or stevia if you'd like. Hydration is important, as many times humans mistake thirst for hunger. This breakfast will give you adequate hydration, protein, healthy fat, probiotics, and antioxidants. Why not kick start your day right? Ingredients below:

Ingredients:
3/4 cup 0% nonfat plain organic greek yogurt
1-2 tsp vanilla extract
stevia to taste (I used 2/3 packet)
1 tbsp Raw pecans
1-2 tbsp blueberries

Introducing the Juicing and smoothie Chronicles - Chronicle #1 - You Cant Beat Beets!

One of my new years resolutions is to incorporate more juicing into my diet, in addition to my beloved green smoothies. I'll be exploring new juice combinations as well as smoothie combinations and chronicaling this journey.

Introducing the Juicing and Smoothie Chronicles!

Juicing Chronicle #1

Beet, apple, cucumber, and ginger juice

I was in wholefoods yesterday and was craving beets. I've found that the more I've been juicing and increasing my consumption of green smoothies, the more I am craving fresh fruits and veggies rather than processed foods. For one, my body chose a beet, apple, cucumber, and ginger juice over a host of cookies and muffins that surrounded me. I must say, that this was a delicious drink.

Beet
Powerful antioxidant and detoxifyer. Comparable to medicine

Ginger
  • Improves absorption. - Improves the absorption and stimulation of essential nutrients in the body by stimulating gastric and pancreatic enzyme secretion.
  • Cold and Flu Prevention.
  • Reduce Pain and Inflammation. -Contains some of the most potent anti-inflammatory fighting substances known and is a natural powerful painkiller.
  • Fights Common Respiratory Problems - Aids in expanding your lungs and loosening up phlegm as it breaks down and removes mucus
  • Maintains Normal Blood Circulation. - Contains chromium, magnesium and zinc which can help to improve blood flow
Cucumber
  • Aids in managing diabetes, reduces cholesterol and controls blood pressure - Cucumber juice contains a hormone which is needed by the cells of the pancreas for producing insulin which has been found to be beneficial to diabetic patients. Silica in cucumbers also aids in keeping joints healthy
Apples
  • Rich in vitamins A, C, and fiber.
Give this a try and let me know what you think!
